A westward expansion from the civilizations of western Asia and Egypt began about bc and led to settlements in Crete, the Cyclades, and mainland Greece. The fundamental difference between these and the earlier, Neolithic cultures is that stone tools and weapons were replaced by those made of copper and, later, bronze. The Chalcolithic Copper-Stone Age, lasting in the Aegean area from the early 3rd millennium bc to the beginning of the 2nd, is usually considered a part of the greater Bronze Age , which was superseded by the Iron Age from about bc.

Khan proposed using the perimeter wall of a building to mimic a thin tube rather than designing structures around a solid central core, thus better enabling tall towers to withstand the impact of horizontal forces, such as high winds or earthquake vibrations. The innovation also drastically reduced construction costs and environmental impact as it required fewer materials to execute. It stands storeys high and was the second-tallest building in the world when it was completed in Completed in and standing at storeys, the building remains the second-tallest in the US.

Glasgow’s Merchant City is a district centred around the mediaeval old town, which is now a vibrant part of the modern city. Synchronised drawings of Merchant City clock towers, all with blue and gold faces The old city of Glasgow was some way east of the present city centre, and was situated around Glasgow Cross and the Cathedral. The map below is a Victorian representation of the secular part of the town in , created from original records by Sir James Marwick who was Town Clerk of Glasgow from to The religous sector of the old city is featured in my Glasgow Cathedral Precinct page.
The eastern end of Tronegait, at the Mercat Cross, was the site of the “Trone” or “Tron”, which was a beam used for weighing goods brought to market. Saltmarket, where the fish curers operated was known at this time as “Walkergait”. The trade carried out by the waulkers was cloth bleaching. The residents and workers in the vicinity got their water supplies from a “stock” or wooden well which gave its name to the street.
There were 4 streams in the area flowing into the Clyde. The western stream is shown in the map as “Burn called Glasgw”. The eastern stream is the Moledinar Burn flowing from the north, which was joined by the “Burn called Poldrait” and the “Burn called Camlawchty” Camlachie Burn from the east before reaching the Clyde. The tower is now a traffic island in the middle of High Street, and is all that remains of the Tolbooth which was built in to house Glasgow’s council chamber and administrative headquarters.
The old building, which was attached to the tower, was demolished after the First World War. The outline of the missing part can still be spotted by the difference in stone colour on the sides of the tower.

Influences[ edit ] The Netherlands provided William Bruce with many of his influences. He was in the Low Countries at a time when Italian Classicism was the height of fashion, and similarities have been observed between Bruce’s work, particularly Holyroodhouse, and such buildings as the Amsterdam City Hall —65 , the work of Jacob van Campen , and Maastricht ‘s City Hall —64 , by Pieter Post. These modern French designs, incorporating features then unknown in Scotland, such as the double-pile of major rooms in two enfilades , ranged back-to-back, were also influential on Bruce’s designs.
His country houses took the compact Anglo-Dutch type as their model, as introduced into England by Hugh May and Sir Roger Pratt , but with Continental detailing, such as the rustication on the facade at Mertoun. Konrad Ottenheym concludes that Bruce employed an “international style”, which was fashionable in France, Holland, and England, and that he was pivotal in disseminating this style in Scotland. At Panmure, although Bruce has been credited with the design in the past, the works were overseen by Alexander Nisbet, although Bruce did design the gates and gate piers.
Panmure was demolished in the s, and only a small part of Leslie House remains standing, following a fire in the 18th century. He doubled the L-plan house to a near-symmetrical U-plan, and may have built the curving wing-walls and linking pavilions. Gifford, however, attributes these to a later building phase. Bruce, working with King’s master mason Robert Mylne , extended the building with new corner pavilions and a new entrance, and re-planned the interior.
Lauderdale continued to employ Bruce, often working closely with Lord Haltoun, Lauderdale’s brother, during the s, on his homes at Brunstane near Edinburgh, and Lethington later renamed Lennoxlove , as well as commissioning a design for new gates at his English property, Ham House , near London, in At Ham Bruce may have had further involvement with the remodelling works going on there, under the direction of the English architect William Samwell. Aside from this project, he only carried out minor repairs to Edinburgh and Stirling Castles, and to the fortifications on the Bass Rock.
Nothing was done however, and in the palace was burnt out, destroying all but the west range.

Upon encountering a new site, the archaeologist immediately requires information about its age in order to set it in context with other sites. In research into our heritage the conservationist or architect may be able to date the general period of a building he is working with from either the situation, materials of construction, type of timber joints or other stylistic features. Almost certainly the century or portion of a century when it was built may be assigned with some certainty.

For the executives present, the mood could be summed up in one word: Formerly at the Guardian, Dame Carolyn has been a huge success in her current job, with EasyJet announcing better than expected profits this week. Having spent many years as a BBC executive dealing with contracts in front of and behind the camera, I know that pay is largely governed by how loud the talent or their agent screams and complains.
The reason why some BBC radio and television presenters are paid so much is often because their contracts go back decades, and will have included built-in rises every year as well as pension perks. Shedding these long-running deals can be gruesomely expensive. Of course this goes on everywhere, not just the BBC. If viewers stop watching, ad revenue falls, and then contracts are terminated abruptly.
In the commercial world, everyone is highly disposable, and audiences are constantly researched.
Anamorphism is usually considered a form of Illusion or Trompe l’oeil, but is really the logical mathematical continuation of Perspective. While studying Classical Architecture and Perspective, Kurt Wenner applied the principles of Classical Drawing and Classical Design to the sidewalk, completely transforming the art form. Masterpieces in Chalk was the National Geographic documentary that established 3D Street Painting as a new art form, but only after 15 years could other artists sometimes with the aid of computer programs replicate the illusions.
The most recent development in pavement art is interactive pavement art. Interactive sidewalk art, interactive pavement art, and interactive street painting, are all terms that describe large-scale paintings that allow members of the public to pose on them.

Atop a huge iceberg-esque setup on the stage, instantly, the show has a political feel. Is she hinting at the effects of climate change? Or is she using it as a mountain from which Mother Nature Paloma is to preach to humanity, spreading her new message of peace and hope? I love Nicola Sturgeon. Steering away from politics – for now – attention is turned to latest record The Architect which saw the singer claim her first UK number one in the album charts back in November.
Kings and Queens gives an insight into the time a year-old Paloma fell for the dreadlocked, bad boy of town. Powerful number WW3 gets the singer going. This is what happens when we elect the wrong people. The pinnacle of the night comes when the Hackney girl pours her everything into the soulfully heartbreaking Just Be from album Fall to Grace. Draped over a grand piano, she curls into the fetal position, eyes closed as she sings about the ups and downs of everyday relationships.
The audience whoops, cheers, eventually giggling, during a prolonged silence as Paloma is snapped back into reality.
